A sign of the NY Times

The New York Times has hired its first social media editor, a new role aimed at expanding and promoting the 157-year-old newspaper's presence twitter, facebook, youtube and digg (among others).

The role will entail working closely with editors, reporters and bloggers to help them use social media to find sources, contacts and information, to gather and break news and get tweeting.

Some other well-known papers such as the Wall Street Journal have gone the other way, taking a much less liberal approach but could this appointment and their adoption of social networking be a wake up call for other media publishers?
